"Happy is that people who have no history" is a version of a quote from Tolstoy. I borrowed it, however, from Goleta: the Good Land by Walker A. Tompkins a book on the local history of the Goleta "valley" a coastal town just north of Santa Barbara, CA. Walker's book discusses how The Good Land came to be the accepted but false translation of Goleta (which is actually derived from the Spanish galata referring to the large sea-faring vessels that docked here and brought settlers, missionaries, and soldiers). Hidden in the border design are swastikas which sparkle in the grayscale grid-pattern. A common design motif with obvious historical connotations and cross-cultural precedence, here it is merely an optical pattern design.
